The gaming world is witness an uprising yet to be seen by any developer against the major app stores. One of the world most popular games, Fortnite, has been removed by Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google from their app stores. Fortnite is played by billions of people around the world and would be hailed as one of the most popular games out in the market right now.
It all starts with Fortnite violating the companies store guidelines. Leading to the developer, Epic Games, to file a antitrust lawsuits, challenging the two companies. Ironically, Epic Games, is not suing for any money but however challenging the practices of the companies with respect to their app stores.
In Epic Games lawsuit filed with Northern Distract of California, it stated ”Apple has become what it once railed against: the behemoth seeking to control markets, block competition, and stifle innovation. Apple is bigger, more powerful, more entrenched, and more pernicious than the monopolists of yesteryear.”
In amazing fashion, Epic Games, began a #FreeFortnite campaign and asking its massive following to support the campaign. In “Epic” fashion, the company created a “game play” simulated parody of Apple’s 1984 television ad.
In the years that have passed many developers have complained about Apple and Google stores practices. Claims have been that the popular stores take as much as 30% of each sale. In the past years many developer have complained and challenged, yet little has been done to make any material changes. Epic Games is the first prominent company to support such a campaign and could potentially produce the needed results many developers have been waiting for.
We leave you with this “Epic” video to decide for yourself.
